About This Report
The 2026 Health & Fitness Association Global Report provides an overview of selected health and fitness markets worldwide. It includes key metrics—such as commercial industry revenue, number of health and fitness facilities, and total membership—across a wide range of global markets and summarizes relevant demographic, policy, and market trends based on data from calendar year 2025.
Unless otherwise noted, this report focuses on the commercial fitness industry. It excludes hotel fitness centers, corporate wellness facilities, and children-only gyms.
The report is structured to guide the reader from a global overview to region- and country-specific analysis. It begins with an Industry Overview that outlines the broader context of the commercial fitness sector. This is followed by a Market Insights section, which starts with a global analysis—including summary tables, global operator rankings, and business expectations—before transitioning into region-specific chapters. Each regional chapter includes a regional summary, profiles of leading operators, and select country reports. Country reports feature national market data and narrative insights from national federations or other leading market experts where available.
The report also includes a directory of company profiles for many of the world’s leading health and fitness operators.
Coverage and Interpretation
This report provides an overview of selected health and fitness markets worldwide. It focuses primarily on the commercial fitness industry and calendar-year 2025, although earlier or more recent figures are used where necessary and identified in the relevant tables or market notes. Some national datasets include public, nonprofit, hotel, or other facilities outside the report’s general commercial scope.
Definitions, collection methods, and market boundaries vary by country. Figures should therefore be treated as indicators of market scale, structure, and direction rather than fully standardized measures. Country results should not be summed to calculate a global market total.
Survey-based operator results are voluntary benchmarks, generally reported as 2025 medians unless otherwise stated, and are not weighted to represent the global industry. Operator 2026 expectations reflect respondents’ outlook at the time of the survey, not HFA forecasts. Country commentary reflects the analysis of the named federation or market expert.
Data Collection and Sources
HFA compiled the report using proprietary research, national federation data, independent research, company disclosures and direct submissions, third-party data, and existing market studies. Where multiple figures were available, HFA prioritized the most recent information from sources considered authoritative and sufficiently documented. Reference years and as-of dates are provided in the relevant tables, profiles, or market notes.
The 2026 Fitness Industry Data Survey was conducted from February through June 2026 and included 244 operators representing nearly 27,000 facilities worldwide. Responses were reviewed for completeness and internal consistency. Survey results, company disclosures, federation input, and supplementary research informed the operator analysis, rankings, and company profiles.
Rankings and profiles are not an exhaustive census. Facility counts may include corporate-owned, franchised, and licensed locations and may refer to either an individual brand or a parent-company portfolio.
Unless otherwise noted, local-currency amounts were converted to US dollars using average 2025 exchange rates published by the US Internal Revenue Service. Figures may be rounded for presentation.
