THE STORIES BEHIND THE NEWS
Liz Clark Named One of the ‘Most Influential People Shaping Healthcare Policy’
Over the years, HFA President and CEO Liz Clark has earned recognition on numerous occasions from the Beltway press. She’s been chosen as one of DC’s top lobbyists by Washingtonian Magazine for three straight years, and in December, she earned another accolade from the publication when she was named one of the most influential people shaping healthcare policy.
According to Washingtonian Magazine, Clark joins “54 Washingtonians who know the ins and outs of healthcare policy, regulation, and access. All were on our most recent list of the 500 Most Influential People in Washington, which we put together through extensive research.”
Professionals on this list are selected through a rigorous process and must meet three key criteria: possess deep subject-matter expertise with an understanding of how to effectively drive action in Washington; grasp nuances and complexities of specific policy areas; and display expertise in fields believed to be particularly significant to the current slate of elected officials.
Clark’s inclusion on this list is a breakthrough, not just for the fitness industry and HFA, but also for public health. Clark leads HFA’s advocacy mission and regularly works with congressional leaders and administration officials to advance industry goals in the US. She also works with global organizations (e.g., World Health Organization, the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development) and HFA federation partners around the world to promote investment in public health policies that create programs, messaging, and financial incentives that will center physical activity as a vital solution to the global health crisis.

Clark’s leadership has not only elevated the association’s profile but also helped position the health and fitness industry as a vital stakeholder in public health policy conversations. As Washingtonian Magazine states, Clark is on a short list of “people who are being listened to right now and who are in the rooms where policy is being crafted.”
HFA members should be greatly encouraged that they have a recognized and respected voice “in the room” when laws and regulations affecting the fitness industry are being debated.
