Grit City Wellness Begins Its Franchise Phase
Founder and CEO Chyna Willman is taking her all-in-one concept national.

Walking away at the peak of a 20-year, high-pressure career in the automotive industry, Chyna Willman bet everything on a vision. Struggling with fatigue, burnout, fibromyalgia, and lupus, she imagined a place where busy professionals could take care of themselves, recover, and recharge.
“I have a knack for seeing things that are coming and had an idea about trends people would eventually adopt,” she recalls. “Growing up, I learned that if I wanted anything, I was going to have to do it [myself]. So I just got the guts to make this move.”
Or you could call it grit. In October 2019, Willman opened Grit City Wellness, a unique model with fitness, recovery, and wellness in Tacoma, Washington, a city that earned the nickname Grit City for its blue-collar ethos.
Now, Willman, the CEO as well as founder of Grit City Wellness, is franchising the brand, getting the go-ahead after dedicating 18 months to completing her Franchise Disclosure Document (FDD). She is also raising capital to open 10 more stores.
“I’m really grateful that I was able to prove my concept and have it ready for the market,” says Willman, who is a member of the HFA Board of Directors. “All of a sudden, I’m right on time for these equity conversations.”

The Model: Wellness From the Beginning
Grit City Wellness was intentionally designed for people whose needs extend beyond traditional fitness—like Willman.
“You rarely find people in the gym who are overweight or chronic pain sufferers—a lot of them have limited mobility,” she says. “And the classic workaholic has way too many demands on their time.”
Variety is built in to drive engagement. The brand offers multiple boutique concepts and traditional gym options under one roof. Grit City Wellness offers:
● A 24-hour fitness facility;
● Yoga, Pilates, and mind-body group classes;
● Health coaching;
● Wellness programming;
● Whole-body cryotherapy;
● Infrared sauna;
● Red-light therapy;
● Compression therapy;
● Therapeutic massage;
● Breathwork; and
● Somadome Meditation Pod.
“We spin so many plates because everybody is not the same, and their needs, availability, interests, or moods change,” she says. “Our high retention has to do with our ability to change with the needs of the customer every day.”
It’s about meeting people where they are and taking them through a journey.
“If all you can do today is sit in the sauna and answer your emails to address your personal health, feel better, and reduce your stress level, then we've got you,” Willman says.

Alternative treatments mix with traditional club features, offering something for everyone.

Accessibility and Community
The company has three monthly membership options based on the number of included recovery services: $79, $179, and $279. All memberships include one Inbody scan, a health assessment, free parking, guest passes, towel service, and locker room amenities.
“People today want more for their dollar and a place that reflects their own value system,” Willman says. “Grit City addresses that and offers a more accessible, 24-hour boutique gym experience.”
Many members are corporate executives, business owners, and people who are just tired of being tired. Grit City aims to simplify self-care through convenience, efficiency, and connection.
“Our customers give so much of themselves every single day that they have to invest in themselves to keep going,” Willman explains. “Keeping everything under one roof maximizes time and money, and we have the opportunity to customize services, get real-life feedback, compile anecdotal evidence, and really build community.”
Integral to that community is acceptance. In whatever format, progress and results are individual, motivational, and celebrated.
“I want this brand to be incredibly inclusive,” Willman emphasizes. “Regardless of how old you are or how much you weigh, you don’t have to lift weights to be gritty. You’re gritty because you showed up and did it. We see the grit in you. We just want to acknowledge the humanness in one another and the strength that maybe isn’t evident from a muscle T-shirt—and give credit where it’s due.”
Franchising the 'Right Way'
As she begins franchising, Willman says her priority is building the business "the right way," grounded in regulatory compliance, integrity, and ethics. She plans to work closely with franchisees, leveraging the leadership and mentoring skills she developed during her corporate career.
“I’d rather ‘A+’ this from the start and then be able to share that with a high level of competency,” Willman says. “The goal for me is to fully embody the CEO role so every location is standardized.”
Willman says it’s critical to hire talented employees, treat them well, and conduct comprehensive training and education. That means compensating them to the point where they feel valued and that Grit City is making a commitment to them.
“I’d like to provide strong, salaried jobs for people to do this miraculous, beautiful work and make sure they can pursue whatever they want to achieve,” she says. “What my team loves the most is the outcome for the customers.”
Ultimately, what drives Willman is providing a solution for people who felt like she did when she took the leap to create Grit City Wellness.
“At my core, I’m really a humanitarian,” she says. “I ask myself what I can do to help the world. This is how I’ve decided to help, and I hope it has a butterfly effect. All I really want is for this business to be in every neighborhood, because it’s a good thing.”
Franchising Grit City Wellness: What It Costs and What to Expect
After seven years in operation, Grit City Wellness has developed a formula that offers potential franchisees several advantages.
“We fit into 5,000 to 6,000 square feet, which is a sweet spot and incredibly attractive in commercial real estate,” says Grit City Wellness founder and CEO Chyna Willman. “You’re not looking at a huge investment—the model is very boot-strappy—and it’s easy to achieve ROI in this space.”
The $50,0000 franchise fee includes all branding, operations, systems, processes, curriculum, and training. The total investment ranges from $600,000 to $1 million, depending on location. ROI is projected within 18 months.
Plus, Grit City Wellness has proven it fits well with mixed-use developments where people work, live, play, and shop.
“Many people have said they moved here because we are here,” Willman says. “And a lot of people who aren’t members come in for our services. We’re like a mini anchor.”
Grit City Wellness is also an option for owners of other fitness businesses that have hit a ceiling and can no longer increase revenue. This can appeal to a business owner near the end of a current franchise agreement.
“If these places convert to a Grit City Wellness, they can keep their lease, stay in their location, benefit from established clientele, and increase their price per customer pretty significantly,” she says. “Plus, while their franchise fee would be the same, they can use most of their existing equipment, so their investment could drop to $200,000 to $300,000.”
The brand is approved for franchising in Arizona, Colorado, Idaho, Nevada, New Mexico, Texas, and Washington state. Willman is negotiating with two firms for growth capital and anticipates closing on private equity in August.
“There’s a lot of interest in this space, and the goal is to work with a group that really believes in the vision of Grit City, what it can and should be, and who wants to be involved and add value beyond capital,” she says.
