Luke Carlson HEALTH & FITNESS ASSOCIATION BOARD CHAIR

Perspective Matters

I’m obsessed with gaining perspective—reading a book, attending a conference, visiting a colleague, participating in a peer group—they all give me perspective. A lay of the land.

One of the things I value most about the annual HFA Global Report is the perspective it provides. I read the report not simply to understand what is happening in our industry, but to better understand the environment in which we are all operating. Issues such as: What are consumers seeking? Where are operators finding growth? What business models are emerging? Who’s thriving? Is there a trend emerging? And, perhaps most importantly, is there a mega-trend that will shape our future?

I use that perspective in my own role as CEO of Discover Strength. Understanding what is happening across the industry helps me think more clearly about our strategic direction, where we should invest, and where we should deliberately choose to be different.

At the same time, I have always believed that our best innovations should not come from an obsession with our competitors or from chasing the latest trend. They should come from understanding our customers at an intimate level and having a deep understanding of our own organization's capabilities and strengths.

The HFA Global Report helps provide that context. Our customers and our core capabilities help provide the direction.

I believe the best strategy comes from bringing those two perspectives together: understanding the world around us while remaining deeply grounded in who we are and whom we serve.
